What is SimHebrew?

SimHebrew is a lossless, one-to-one mapping between Square (Unicode) Hebrew characters and standard extended ASCII characters. It lets Hebrew live in environments where Unicode Hebrew is awkward, impossible, or gets mangled — URLs, catalog records, code comments, and text-analysis pipelines that expect ASCII.

Why not just use Unicode Hebrew everywhere?

In an ideal world, yes. In practice many systems still choke on RTL text or non-ASCII bytes: URLs percent-encode Hebrew into unreadable hex, older library catalogs strip or replace non-Latin characters, programming toolchains often mis-render RTL comments, and many text analytics tools require normalised ASCII input. SimHebrew is a practical fallback for exactly those cases.

Is the conversion really lossless?

For consonants, yes — every Square Hebrew letter maps to exactly one SimHebrew character (and vice versa), including the final "sofit" forms, which are recovered from context on the way back. Vowel points (nikud) and cantillation marks are not preserved, with two exceptions: holam (וֹ) and shuruk (וּ) on vav, which map to o and u respectively.

How do I read SimHebrew out loud?

Read each ASCII character as the Hebrew letter it stands for, not as its English sound. With a little practice this becomes automatic — much like reading foreign loanwords in your own language.
